The Port of Santos received the largest ship of bulk fertilizers in history on January 18th. The Singapore-flagged MV Benfica ship arrived at the Guarujá Maritime Terminal (TERMAG) carrying approximately 76,000 tons of ammonium sulfate and ammonium phosphate, both of which are used to enrich soils and are essential nutrients for plants.
Bulkfertz, which represents international producers of fertilizer inputs, charted the vessel. The service was conducted by Unimar Agenciamentos Marítimos.
This is the largest volume of fertilizer imports ever recorded by the port authorities at the Port of Santos. According to data from the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade, and Services, Brazil’s imports of ammonium sulfate increased by 9% compared to the same period in 2020, and imports of ammonium phosphate increased by 53%.
“The fertilizer market in 2022 tends to be as challenging as it was in 2021. Average queues of 25 to 40 days should continue in most ports and the prices of these inputs are not expected to decrease anytime soon. When comparing fertilizer imports from 2020 to 2021, we saw a 4% increase and a record volume that had never been seen before. “40 million tons have already been imported,” said Barbara Matos, New Business Analyst at Unimar.
The cargo will be sent via road and rail modes to several Brazilian states.
