The Port of São Sebastião is making progress on maintenance dredging at berth 101, a project considered essential for the terminal’s efficient operations. According to the State Secretariat for Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics (Semil), completion is expected in October. So far, 22,000 cubic meters of sediment have been removed, accounting for 40% of the total volume.
The work is being carried out by Companhia Docas de São Sebastião (CDSS), with authorization from Ibama, and complies with all current environmental requirements. The goal is to restore the minimum operational depth of 10 meters at the berth, ensuring safety and predictability in operations.
“With this dredging, we are keeping the terminal in full condition to meet demand with efficiency, safety, and environmental responsibility,” said CDSS president Ernesto Sampaio.
The removed sediments are being deposited in the Containment Dike, an internal port area designated exclusively for this material. According to the company, the practice is sustainable, as only high-quality, uncontaminated sediments are received, which can later be reused.
Dredging is necessary due to natural silting caused by rainfall, winds, ocean currents, and vessel movement. This intervention ensures the port maintains strategic conditions for cargo flow along the northern coast of São Paulo state and guarantees the full use of the berth.
Port operations on the rise
In the first half of 2025, the port authority handled 858,000 tonnes of cargo. In July, the main berth reached 97% occupancy, with 166,000 tonnes, the highest monthly volume since 2018. Among the main products handled were bulk sugar and soda ash, as well as wheat, which was exceptionally moved through the terminal that month.
