Shanghai has seen a large increase in exports of containers and container ships in the first eight months of this year, according to a local customs office.
From January to August, Shanghai exported 246,000 containers, twice as much as in the same period last year, according to the agency. The value of exports rose 455% to 8.06 billion yuan ($1.25 billion).
During the period, the city also exported 16 container ships for a value of 7.99 billion yuan. There was no record of container ships being exported during the same period last year.
The growth in exports of containers and container ships shows that global demand for products made in China remains strong in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, customs officials said.
Demand from the container market has been strong, while global shipping prices have soared since the third quarter of 2020, according to Shanghai CIMC Baowell Industries Co., Ltd., which exported 163,000 containers in the January-August period.
