On June 12, Sri Lanka announced that it will file a claim for 40 million dollars from the owner of a cargo ship that caused major contamination off its coast after a fire on board.
The Minister of Ports and Maritime Transport, Rohitha Abeygunawardena, indicated that they had filed a provisional complaint with X-Press Feeders, owner of the vessel “MV X-Press Pearl”, registered in Singapore.
The ship sank on June 2 off the coast of Colombo after burning for nearly two weeks and scattering millions of plastic granules that were destined for Sri Lanka’s packaging industry.
Environmentalists call it “the worst marine ecological disaster” in Sri Lanka’s history, affecting 80 kilometers of coastline and tourist beaches, as well as fishing grounds.
“In addition, we are going to demand the reimbursement of expenses incurred to put out the fire,” added the minister, specifying that he has not yet fully evaluated the impact of the accident on the local economy.
Authorities requested Australia’s assistance in this assessment.
