The Suape Industrial Port Complex, located in the metropolitan region of Recife, wants to add renewable sources into its power mix and plans to reach a 50% share of clean energy in total consumption later this semester.

Currently, 35.95% of the electricity used by Suape already comes from renewable sources, reflecting an institutional strategy focused on energy efficiency, emissions reduction and preparing port infrastructure for a low-carbon economy.

Renewable energy supplies high-demand areas of the complex, including the administrative center, Piers 1, 4 and 5, the public vehicle yard and the Port Authority building.

Annual consumption across these units totals around 1.46 GWh, linked to administrative and operational activities. For comparison, this is equivalent to the monthly electricity consumption of roughly 7,300 low-income households, based on average usage of up to 200 kWh.

Parallel initiatives are also underway. Suape’s forest nursery — with capacity to produce about 450,000 seedlings per year — is powered entirely by solar energy. The facility supports environmental and sustainability projects across the port complex, which spans 17,300 hectares, with 59% of the area designated as an Ecological Preservation Zone.

Smart System

Beyond expanding the use of clean energy, Suape has invested in technological solutions to optimize electricity consumption. At Pier 5 and the vehicle yard, an intelligent lighting system automatically adjusts intensity based on operational needs, generating estimated energy savings of around 60% in those areas.

For Suape chief executive Armando Monteiro Bisneto, initiatives like these underscore the state-owned company’s commitment to sustainability, innovation and strengthening a port model aligned with the demands of the energy transition. “This is the path forward, and we are working hard to keep moving ahead,” he said.
