Telescopic chutes boost sustainability and safety at Paranaguá Port

An investment of R$12.2 million in infrastructure will ensure greater sustainability for the Eastern Export Corridor at the Port of Paranaguá. The new equipment, known as telescopic chutes, will eliminate airborne grain and meal particles during cargo handling operations.

Installation of the first of four chutes began on Monday (15) and complies with recommendations from the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) to eliminate suspended particles. Each unit is installed at the end of the shiploader (equipment used to load ships with grains and meals) and has an operating capacity of up to 2,000 tonnes per hour.

The Director of Engineering and Maintenance at Portos do Paraná, Victor Kengo, explained that the main advantage of the new equipment is increased environmental safety and improved working conditions for dockworkers and cargo handlers. “This investment reinforces Portos do Paraná’s commitment to best sustainability practices,” he said.

Additional benefits include reduced energy consumption and productivity gains in operations. “The telescopic chute reduces electricity consumption because it uses fewer motors, and maintenance is simpler, as it does not have a filter system, avoiding shutdowns for maintenance and replacement, as occurs with the current system,” explained Normando Marcondes, General Maintenance Manager at Portos do Paraná.

The installation period was selected in line with the maintenance phase already scheduled by Atexp (Association of Terminals of the Paranaguá Export Corridor). All four systems are expected to be installed by February 2026.

EXPORT CORRIDOR – The Eastern Export Corridor includes berths 212, 213, and 214 at the Port of Paranaguá and is responsible for a large share of solid bulk cargo exported overseas. The most recent productivity record in the area was set during the loading of corn on a single vessel. The operation took place in the first week of December, when the ship MV Minoan loaded 77,000 tonnes of the product.
