Trump Says He Will Not Delay Deadline for Import Tariffs to Take Effect

Week 202528

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he will not extend the August 1 deadline for implementing so-called reciprocal tariffs, which will apply to imports from countries that fail to reach trade agreements with the United States.

“TARIFFS WILL BEGIN TO BE PAID ON AUGUST 1, 2025. There has been no change to that date, and there will be no change,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. “In other words, all money will be due and must be paid starting AUGUST 1, 2025 – No extensions will be granted.”

Trump began notifying trade partners about the new tariffs on Monday. However, the letters were accompanied by an executive order postponing the start date by three weeks—effectively giving an extension for negotiations.

The American president also said on Monday evening that the August 1 deadline “was not 100% definitive” when speaking to reporters, suggesting at that time that he might be persuaded to make additional concessions.

That caveat—combined with the fact that Trump was still signaling ongoing negotiations—fueled skepticism in Washington and on Wall Street about whether the president would actually follow through with his latest tariff threat.

The Republican initially announced the higher reciprocal tariffs for more than 50 trade partners on April 2 but temporarily reduced those rates to 10% for 90 days to allow time for negotiations between parties. That deadline was set to expire this week, but Trump signed an executive order on Monday delaying implementation to August 1.
