Uruguay forestry exports rise 13% in first half as wood shipments grow

Uruguay forestry exports posted a solid performance in the first half of the year, supported by higher shipment volumes of several wood-based products, including eucalyptus logs, pine and wood chips.

Overall, forestry sector exports reached about $740 million in the first half, up 13% from the same period in 2025.

Exports of eucalyptus logs to Vietnam and China rose by nearly 30% in volume compared with the first half of last year. The product also benefited from better prices, with sales reaching close to $20 million.

India consolidated its position as the main destination for Uruguayan pine. Shipments to the country increased by around 20% in volume, although prices remained weak and below industry expectations.

The first half also saw a 15% increase in eucalyptus log shipments to free trade zones, while wood chip exports recovered by nearly 20%.

Nelson Ledesma, former president of the Society of Forestry Producers and a member of Senda Forestal, said the sector’s main challenge is to create alternatives that allow Uruguay to capture more value from production. That includes logistics improvements, cost reductions and the search for new markets.

Ledesma said pulp prices in China currently stand between $550 and $590 per tonne, while demand remains very weak and inventories are high in Europe and Asia, according to digital outlet Ámbito. He added that no significant short-term recovery is currently expected.

For exporters and logistics operators, the performance of Uruguay forestry exports highlights both the resilience and the challenges of the sector. Higher volumes are supporting trade flows, but weak pulp prices and cost pressures continue to weigh on margins.
