Uruguay leather exports fall 19% in first half despite June rebound

Uruguay leather exports declined sharply in the first half of 2026, although June brought signs of recovery for the sector, according to the latest report from Uruguay XXI, the country’s export, investment and country-brand promotion agency.

Exports of leather and leather goods totaled $35 million from January to June, down 19% from the $44 million recorded in the same period of 2025.

Datamar data indicate that Uruguay exported just 46 TEUs of leather-sector products in the first five months of the year, compared with 75 TEUs in the same period a year earlier. The chart below shows the main destinations for these shipments:

Despite the weaker first-half result, monthly data showed an improvement. Leather exports reached $7 million in June, up 13% from the $6 million shipped in June 2025.

The fur and fur apparel segment followed a similar pattern. According to Uruguay XXI, exports in the category totaled $2 million in the first half of 2026, down 9% from $3 million a year earlier.

In June, fur exports remained marginal, with sales below $1 million. Still, the segment posted an 11% increase compared with the same month of 2025.

For trade and logistics operators, the figures point to a weaker first-half performance for Uruguay leather exports, even as the June rebound suggests some resilience in external demand. The sector remains a smaller component of Uruguay’s export basket but continues to be monitored as part of the country’s diversified manufacturing and animal-origin product trade.
