Uruguay carried out its first tariff-free fish shipment to the European Union on Monday, May 11, under the Mercosur-European Union agreement. The information was confirmed by Juan Riva-Zucchelli, president of Uruguay’s Chamber of Fishing Industries (CIPU).
The cargo, consisting of 28 tonnes of HGT hake — headless, gutted and tailless — is bound for Lithuania. The shipment was loaded aboard the Insa, operated by MSC.
The operation was carried out by Ciupsa. Industry representatives said the shipment represents not only a commercial transaction but also the beginning of a new stage in terms of competitiveness.
Access to the European market at a 0% tariff removes a long-standing 15% duty on Uruguayan fish exports. According to the business group, the change significantly improves access conditions to one of the world’s most demanding and highest-value markets.
CIPU also noted that the European Union is the world’s largest importer of fishery products and that improved tariff conditions create significant opportunities to expand Uruguay’s position in that market.
