On September 30, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a package of nearly $1.5 billion in investments in the US agricultural sector. One of the highlights will be the allocation of up to US$ 500 million for the prevention of African Swine Fever in the country, a disease that has re-emerged in the Americas after nearly 40 years and has already decimated herds around the world.
The US government’s proposal to prevent the spread of the disease involves expanding animal health monitoring and surveillance activities on American soil. “[ASF] outbreaks have been devastating in other parts of the world. It is critical that we all work together to prevent the spread of this disease,” the USDA said in a statement.
The disease was confirmed at the end of July in the Dominican Republic after an investigation by the USDA itself. Later, another case was confirmed in Haiti, which further heightened the concern of authorities across the Americas.
