US recommends Brazil for full OECD membership

The United States (US) government said yesterday (14/01) that it intends to appoint Brazil as the next country to join as a full member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The group brings together 36 countries, mostly from Europe and North America.
“The news was very welcome. I’d been working on this for months, in a private way, obviously. There was the announcement [from the US], there are more than 100 requirements to be accepted, we are well ahead, including in front of Argentina. And the advantages for Brazil are many, it’s equivalent to our country entering the first division, ”said President Jair Bolsonaro leaving the Alvorada Palace on Wednesday morning.
In a statement, the US embassy in Brasilia said that the decision to prioritize Brazil’s candidacy now, as the next country to begin the process, is a natural evolution of the commitment, as reaffirmed by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and by President Donald Trump in October 2019. At that time, however, the Secretary of State sent a document to the OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurria expressing support for Argentina and Romania’s entry into the organization.
“The Brazilian government is working to align its economic policies with OECD standards, prioritizing membership of the organization to reinforce economic reforms,” the statement said. “The OECD is a consensus-based organization, and any decision to invite countries to begin the entry process will need to be agreed by all 36 member countries,” he adds.
The OECD brings together the most industrialized countries in the world and sets joint parameters of economic and legislative rules for its members.
