Vehicle handling at the Port of Paranaguá, in southern Brazil, rose sharply in the first eight months of 2026, driven by growing imports of electric and hybrid vehicles from Asia.
Imported vehicle volumes surged 382% between January and August compared with the same period last year.
Including both imports and exports, Paranaguá handled 107,100 vehicles in the first eight months of 2026. That already exceeds the 106,700 units handled during all of 2025 and represents a 58% increase from 67,800 vehicles in the same period last year.
The growth has been supported by four new foreign automakers that selected the terminal operated by Portos do Paraná as an official gateway to the Brazilian market: Omoda, Jaecoo, GWM and Jetour.
They join established manufacturers already using Paranaguá for foreign trade operations, including Audi, Renault, Fiat, GM and Volkswagen, as well as Chinese automaker Geely, which began moving vehicles through the port in 2025.
China consolidated its position as the main origin of vehicles unloaded at Paranaguá in 2026, accounting for 63% of the total.
Mexico ranked second, followed by Germany.
According to Brazilian government trade database Comex Stat, which measures vehicle flows by weight rather than by unit, the Port of Paranaguá handled 137,000 metric tons of imported vehicles in 2026.
That placed Paranaguá second among Brazilian ports for vehicle imports by weight, behind only the Port of Vitória, in Espírito Santo.
