The Port of Sudeste, a private port located in Itaguaí, received on Wednesday (05) the largest ship in the terminal’s history. The vessel VL Prime, a VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier), has the capacity to transport 2 million barrels of oil (about 320,000 tonnes).
The VL Prime arrived on the coast of Rio de Janeiro in ballast (empty), coming from Luoyan County, in China. Port of Sudeste loaded the vessel with 1,000,000 barrels of oil, and it then headed to the Port of Santos for another loading operation. The final destination is the Port of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. Victor Pessoa, Liquid Bulk Operations Manager at Port of Sudeste, says the operation took about 18 hours and demonstrates the logistics preparedness the company has built over the years.
“The operation with the VL Prime in Itaguaí (RJ) represents a significant strategic advance in terms of logistical competitiveness and operational capacity. The ability to handle vessels of this type places Port of Sudeste at a competitive level with international terminals,” said Victor.
Previously, the largest ship that had operated at the terminal was the Cape Apolo, a Woxmax-type vessel, with a capacity of 250,000 tonnes. The bulk carrier was loaded with iron ore.
