Weak Wheat Harvest Prompts Brazil to Increase Imports for Flour Production
Jan, 03, 2024 Posted by Gabriel MalheirosWeek 202401
The Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea) at the University of São Paulo warns that the wheat harvest failure in 2023 and the low quality of harvested grains are expected to drive an increase in the volume of imports in Brazil, especially in the first half of the year, to meet domestic flour production needs.
The National Supply Company’s (Conab) import forecast is set at 6 million tons from August 2023 to July 2024, nearly 33% higher than the previous season.
See below the trend in Brazilian imports of wheat recorded between Jan 2019 and Nov 2023. The data is from DataLiner.

On the flip side, wheat exports for the same period are expected to decrease, reaching 2 million tons, a 24.7% drop from the previous harvest season in Brazil.
Globally, the wheat supply for the 2023/24 season is projected to decline after four consecutive years of growth.
