Rail freight transport shows new growth in April
Jun, 11, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202125
Rail transport ended April with a 5% growth in the total transported volume compared to the same period in 2020. This was another month of growth in all sectors, emphasizing fuel and container handling; this demonstrates the diversification of the modal beyond commodities. The data are reported by ANTF (the national rail transporters association) to ANTT (the national land-transport agency).
Container transport increased 39%. 40-foot containers (TEUs), on the other hand, increased by 41.5%, and fuel increased by 46.5%. This was largely justified by the resumption of flows and investments in safety, permanent ways, and railway operations.
The transport of sugar and mineral coal in April increased by 20% and 18%, respectively. The steel industry presented a 10% decrease. The railroads associated with ANTF registered an increase of 12.4% in the transport of iron ore during the compared period. The transport of general cargo also increased by 4%, generating an accumulated growth of 10.2%.
Another highlight was that production in April at Rumo Malha Central practically doubled with its recently inaugurated 172-kilometers stretch. Production increased by 98%, with a total volume of 443.83 million TKU (of soy) destined for the port of Santos.
