Argentine soybean imports from Paraguay have fallen for the third year in a row

Argentine soybean imports, especially those from Paraguay, have fallen for the third consecutive year.
According to data collected by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC), between January and April 2022, Argentine soybean imports totaled 940 thousand tonnes of soybeans compared to 1.7 million tonnes in the same period, implying a decrease of 44% in year-on-year.
According to the Rosario Stock Exchange (BCR), this is the third consecutive year of reductions in the volume of oilseed imports, which reached a record 2.7 million tonnes in the first four months of 2019.
This season’s decline in Paraguayan production has significantly reduced Argentina’s ability to import soybeans. Thus, it is noteworthy that the estimates of plant protein production by the Paraguayan Grains and Oilseed Traders Association (CAPECO) and the Paraguayan Chamber of Oilseeds and Cereals Processors (CAPPRO) are 3 million tonnes and 3.8 million tonnes, respectively, when it was close to 10 million tonnes in previous cycles.
