Brazil, Dominican Republic to increase pork trade

The Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) celebrated the announcement of the Minister of Agriculture Marcos Montes regarding the Dominican Republic. The Central American country has been severely hit by African Swine Fever on its territory.

Located on an island, it was the only country in the Americas, other than Haiti, to register outbreaks of the disease.

The Minister informed last week, during the Brazilian Cotton Congress, that he would go on a mission to the DR with representatives of the government and the pork production chain to discuss signing a sanitary protocol, according to information from Globo Rural.

In this sense, the pork exporting sector in Brazil remained at the Dominican Republic’s disposal to support food security in the country, famous for being a tourist attraction.

In support of the government’s strategy to increase foreign exchange generation for the country, ABPA has maintained contact with local stakeholders, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Brazilian Embassy in Santo Domingo.

The first pork shipment to the Caribbean country, which is already a traditional importer of chicken meat from Brazil, is likely to happen soon.

In the first seven months of this year alone, Brazil exported 22,200 tonnes of poultry products to the Dominican Republic, a volume 200% higher than that recorded in the same period in 2021.
