Brazilian pork exports surge significantly in May 2023

Brazilian pork meat exports experienced a significant surge in May, as reported by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA). The data reveals that 101.7 thousand tonnes of pork were shipped, marking a noteworthy 13.9% growth compared to the same period last year, which saw 89.3 thousand tonnes exported.

The revenue generated from these exports also substantially increased, reaching US$ 251.4 million in May. This figure represents an impressive 23% growth in comparison to the corresponding period in 2022 when the revenue amounted to US$ 204.3 million.

Year-to-date, from January to May, pork exports amounted to 481.1 thousand tonnes, indicating a substantial 15.5% increase compared to the previous year, which recorded 416.6 thousand tonnes. In terms of revenue, the total balance for this period reached US$ 1.149 billion, reflecting a robust growth of 28.2% compared to the US$ 896.3 million reported during the same period in 2022.

China continues to be the primary importer of Brazilian pork, with imports reaching 176.2 thousand tonnes in the first five months of 2023, representing an impressive 20.8% increase compared to the same period in 2022. Other notable importers include Hong Kong, the Philippines, Chile, and Singapore.

Among the Brazilian states, Santa Catarina emerges as the leading pork exporter, followed closely by Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Mato Grosso. Luís Rua, Markets Director at ABPA, emphasizes the significance of Brazil’s successful entry into the Mexican market and the diversification of markets as crucial factors contributing to the growth of Brazilian pork exports.
