Hygiene and beauty sector surplus decreases in the first semester

Exports from the personal hygiene, perfumery and cosmetics sector advanced 16.9% in the first half of this year, compared to the same period of 2022, to US$ 445.3 million, while imports totaled US$ 419.8 million, high of 20.3%. As a result, the surplus in the period was US$ 25.5 million in the period, a drop of 21% in the annual comparison.
Between January and June of last year, the surplus was US$ 32.3 million, the first positive result since 2010. Data are from the Brazilian Association of the Personal Hygiene, Perfumery and Cosmetics Industry (Abihpec).

The association’s chief executive, João Carlos Basílio, says that the surplus should be consolidated by the end of 2023, reflecting “policies to promote internationalization” as a partnership with ApexBrasil, in addition to the good moment of the Brazilian economy. On the other hand, the entity highlights “challenges of access” to markets in Latin America such as Argentina.
According to Abihpec, the most exported product between January and June was soap, with an increase of 19.4% in the annual amount, to US$ 96.5 million.
The hair products category was the second with the highest export volume, totaling US$ 95.5 million, an increase of 6.8% compared to the first half of 2022. Last year, the category was the leader in exports.
Third place went to deodorants, whose exports jumped 40.9% in the annual comparison, adding up to US$ 45.5 million.
The sector’s international trade flow grew 18.5% in the first half compared to the same period in 2022, to US$ 865.1 million.
