Cargo handling in Brazilian public ports grew 2.14% in the first quarter

The Brazilian port sector handled 276.6 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2022. The main highlight was the handling rate obtained by public ports, which handled 96.5 million tonnes, up 2.14% compared to last year. Antaq disclosed these numbers.

Among the highlights are the Port of Santos (SP), which handled 29.8 million tonnes from January to March 2022 (growth of 9.07%); the Port of Paranaguá (PR), with 12.6 million tonnes (+8.30%); and the Port of Itaqui (MA), which handled 6.2 million tonnes (+4.86%).

Another highlight among the public ports was Vila do Conde (PA), which handled 4.5 million tonnes, increasing 12.32% compared to the first three months of last year. The Madre de Deus Waterway Terminal in Bahia stood out in relation to private facilities. The Bahia-based terminal handled 4.8 million tons (+15.96%).

In terms of goods, soybeans grew by 6.30% in the first quarter compared to the same period in 2021 (31.6 million tonnes); petroleum and derivatives, without crude oil, increased by 3.94% (20.5 million tonnes); and fertilizers, 28.35% to 9.5 million tonnes.

An analysis of these numbers by cargo profile shows that there was robust growth in the handling of general loose cargo in the first quarter of the year, with 17.5 million tonnes handled, up 22.89%.
