The governments of Paraguay and Uruguay have agreed to construct a port in the Uruguayan department of Soriano, granting access to the sea to the landlocked country, as reported by the Paraguayan press.
Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou, who expressed that securing sea access for Paraguay has been a personal desire since his time as a senator, was the first to announce the project.
“For many years, we have insisted that Paraguay should have a maritime outlet in Uruguay, a stable country with a coastline and good depth. Since 2016, when I was a senator, I have been going to Paraguay to work towards this goal,” he emphasized on Saturday, according to the Paraguayan newspaper Última Hora.
“Perhaps this will become a reality soon,” he added.
The project will involve an investment of $300 million and will be executed in two phases.
Paraguay’s Ambassador to Uruguay, Juan Manuel Brunetti, explained that this project promoted by Lacalle Pou can secure Paraguay’s sovereignty over its foreign trade.
Paraguay plays an important role in Uruguayan foreign trade, with exports amounting to $144 million, according to the latest report from the official Uruguayan government website, Uruguai XXI.
