In 2023, Brazilian grain exports from Amazon-region ports exceeded 51 million tonnes, according to data from local port association Amport. These figures illustrate a growth of approximately 22% compared to the 41.5 million tonnes seen in the region known as “Amazon Arc” in 2022.
Flávio Acatauassú, President of Amport, noted the increase helped the entity achieve the estimated goal for the period.
“Despite last year’s challenges, which included a severe drought in the country’s northern region, among other consequences of the climate crisis faced in Brazil, we helped transport, in long-haul operations, 37% of the total agricultural bulk exported by Brazilian ports. This figure surpasses 2022 numbers when the region accounted for 34%,” he explained.
According to the executive, the positive performance highlights the region’s potential and makes investments in Amazonian port activities even more pertinent.
“We can ship over 58 million tonnes of vegetable bulk at the ports of Itacoatiara, Santarém, Santana, Barcarena, and Tegram, and we have projects underway to expand another 42 million tons over the next six years in these ports. This estimate aligns with the growing market demand and shows how much we can still grow strategically and sustainably,” he commented.
Flávio also notes that because of the advanced port infrastructure in Barcarena, a municipality in the Metropolitan Region of Belém (RMB), the state of Pará has gathered more attention in the port and grain transport sector.
“With a convenient location, the Barcarena port complex is in charge of the most significant areas for vessel anchoring. Thus, it shows the importance of our area and its function in the industry. The region also boasts the deepest sea exits, facilitating port logistics and permitting higher shipped volumes,” said Amport’s president.
The Association of Port Terminals and Cargo Transshipment Stations of the Amazon Basin (Amport) brings together 13 companies dealing with vegetable, mineral, and liquid bulk operating in the Amazon region, contributing to strengthening the logistics chain and infrastructure of the Northern Arc.
