Tecon Rio Grande Sees Significant Growth in Coastal Shipping to Northeast Brazil

In 2023, Wilson Sons achieved remarkable growth in coastal shipping results for the Northeast region, facilitated by the Tecon Rio Grande. Compared to 2022, the terminal saw increases in maritime transportation along the Brazilian coast for certain products, notably powdered milk and wine, with jumps of 227% and 106%, respectively. The vessels, bound for the ports of Salvador, Bahia, and Suape, Pernambuco, were primarily driven by the rising demand from Northeastern consumers for both commodities.

Over the past 12 months, Tecon Rio Grande has consistently and significantly increased shipments of powdered milk. Currently, Brazil ranks as the world’s second-largest consumer of the product per household, according to the Family Budget Survey (POF), recently released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). These factors directly influenced the coastal shipping results presented in 2023 by the Rio Grande terminal, which recorded 757 containers, 517 more than in 2022, equivalent to 1,514 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) or 20,676 tons.

Regarding wine shipments, the terminal more than doubled maritime transportation along the Brazilian coast. According to Wine Intelligence, a division of IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, the Northeast region recorded a 4.5% increase in wine consumption over the past three years, surpassing the Brazilian average of 1.9%. In numbers, 189 containers were shipped from Tecon Rio Grande, 97 more than in 2022, representing 374 TEUs and a total volume of 5,096 tons.

Paulo Bertinetti, CEO of Tecon Rio Grande, notes that the Rio Grande industry is increasingly gaining ground among consumers in other Brazilian states and regions. “Wine represents our state as we are one of the largest producers of the beverage in Brazil, and besides our tradition in the segment, we have enormous potential for expanding business to the rest of the country,” comments Bertinetti.
