AMPORT Presents Tapajós River Dredging Project to Federal Government

The Association of Port Terminals and Cargo Transshipment Stations of the Amazon Basin (AMPORT) has submitted the “Dredging Study of the Critical Stretches of the Tapajós River” project to three federal government bodies: the National Secretariat of Ports and Waterway Transport, the National WaterborneTransport Agency (ANTAQ), and the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT). The submission was made in early May by AMPORT’s CEO, Flávio Acatauassú, during a visit to these agencies in Brasília.

The project, spearheaded by AMPORT, was developed in collaboration with engineers from the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) and the logistics company Arco Norte Logística. The study was based on the standard train-type operating currently in the region and was validated by major vegetable bulk companies navigating the Tapajós River, including Cargill, Cianport, HSBA, LDC, TBL, and Unitapajós.

Flávio Acatauassú, President of AMPORT, emphasized that submitting the study to federal agencies is a significant step towards revamping existing research and enhancing navigation on the Tapajós River. “With the recent data and comprehensive information we’ve gathered, we aim to contribute to a thorough analysis that will inform investment programs designed to mitigate the annual disruptions in the logistics chain caused by droughts affecting the Amazon rivers,” Acatauassú stated.
