“Green” Ship with 145,600-Ton Capacity Docks at TCP, Marking a Milestone in Sustainable Maritime Transport

TCP, the operator of the Paranaguá Container Terminal, celebrated a milestone on May 29 with the arrival of the CMA CGM Paraty. This state-of-the-art vessel, launched in 2024 by the renowned French shipping company CMA CGM, heralds a new era in sustainable maritime transportation with its impressive scale and innovative green technologies.

The CMA CGM Paraty, launched in 2024 by the French shipping giant CMA CGM, boasts impressive dimensions: 336 meters in length, 51 meters in width, and a carrying capacity of 13,200 TEUs or 145,600 tons. To put it into perspective, the ship surpasses the height of the Eiffel Tower, which stands at 330 meters, by six meters.

Beyond its massive scale, the CMA CGM Paraty is notable for its distinct green color and advanced windshield structure, which extends above the bow to enhance aerodynamics and improve energy efficiency.

The CMA CGM Paraty’s standout feature is its commitment to sustainable navigation. The ship is powered by Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and incorporates an innovative exhaust gas recirculation system (ICER), which cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 28%.

Carolina Merkle Brown, TCP’s Commercial Shipowner Manager, emphasized the significance of this docking: “The arrival of CMA CGM’s second LNG-powered vessel underscores our mission to advance sustainable port logistics operations. This commitment to innovation and efficiency is crucial in reducing environmental impacts and emissions. Utilizing LNG as a fuel is a vital step towards mitigating climate change and demonstrates our dedication to transitioning to greener maritime practices, in line with global sustainability standards.”

Earlier this year, in January, the Terminal welcomed the CMA CGM Bahia, the first LNG-powered container ship to dock in Paranaguá, sharing the same dimensions as the CMA CGM Paraty.

Investments in Green Technology

TCP has made significant strides in reducing emissions through technological investments. Last year, the terminal successfully converted two RTG cranes used in railway operations, achieving a 95% reduction in CO₂ emissions and a 90% decrease in maintenance costs for each machine.

In addition, TCP introduced a new electric bus, the D9W 20.410 model from Chinese manufacturer BYD, capable of transporting 80 passengers. This vehicle, used within the terminal’s expansive 480,000 square meter operations yard, features a regenerative braking system and ensures zero pollutant emissions.
