Ports in Northern Brazil gain momentum in grain exports in June

Brazilian soybean exports reached 13.95 million tonnes in June this year, marking a 3.7% increase compared to the previous month, according to the Logistics Bulletin of the National Supply Company (Conab), released on Tuesday (7/23). For the year, total soybean exports amounted to 23.3 million tonnes, a 1.7% decline compared to the same period last year.

The appreciation of the dollar against the real boosted sales for the month, making Brazilian soybeans more competitive on the global market. High domestic demand for oil production also helped to support prices, Conab noted.

Of the total exports this year, 36.3% were shipped through ports in Northern Brazil, the so-called Arco Norte, 35.7% through Santos, and 12.6% through Paranaguá. The seaport of São Francisco do Sul accounted for 6.2% of the exported soybeans.

Corn Exports

Corn exports reached 850,000 tonnes in June, nearly double the volume of May. Like soybeans, the global demand and the stronger dollar facilitated this increase. However, domestic prices remain weak due to advances in the first and second harvests and relatively low domestic demand.

For the year, total corn exports reached 4.1 million tons, slightly down from 4.3 million tonnes a year earlier. From January to June, 49% of corn exports moved through Arco Norte, 6.5% through Paranaguá, and 9.6% through São Francisco do Sul.

Freight Market

In the Southeast Region, farming products accounted for 38.3% of the total value of Minas Gerais’s international sales. For the first time in recorded history, the monthly average of exports exceeded US$1 billion from January to May 2024.

In São Paulo, the freight market was also robust due to increased corn sales.

In the Mid-West region, freight rates from the Federal District rose in almost all areas surveyed, particularly for routes to Santos, Guarujá, and Osvaldo Cruz in São Paulo. In Mato Grosso, the second corn harvest, the final stretch of soybean shipments, and intense negotiations significantly impacted logistics and transport demand, driving up prices in all state markets, according to Conab.
