The São Francisco do Sul Port Complex has been authorized to receive vessels with a width of up to 51 meters. The permission, which takes effect next week, benefits the ports of São Francisco and Itapoá.
The São Francisco do Sul Port Captaincy granted the authorization in early December after meetings with the Brazilian Navy, port authorities, and representatives of local pilotage. Until now, the maximum width allowed in the complex was 49 meters.
The move demonstrates that the São Francisco port community is committed to ensuring that operations continue to grow in an organized and sustainable manner, according to Pablo Fonseca, Director of Operations and Logistics at the São Francisco Port. “This achievement is just the beginning: after obtaining authorization for the berthing of vessels of this size, our next step is to make the dredging project for deepening the access channel viable, putting the port complex in ideal conditions to receive ships of 366 meters in length,” he said. Fonseca expects the dredging, costing R$290 million, to begin in 2024.
He further explains that after each maneuver with 51-meter-wide ships, technical reports will be submitted to the Santa Catarina Port Captaincy Office, seeking definitive approval for this type of operation.
