Automakers to Present Export Incentive Proposal to Brazilian Government

Automakers lobby Anfavea is preparing a proposal to the government of Brazil to boost automotive sector exports. During an interview with CNN, Márcio de Lima Leite, the association’s president, voiced concerns over declining export figures.

The proposal includes regulatory measures designed to reduce Brazil’s high operational costs, known as the Custo Brasil, and to support bilateral trade agreements with countries that import Brazilian vehicles.

“Brazil needs to progress in regulatory harmonization. Bilateral agreements with export destinations are essential. We need attention because the Brazilian industry is losing ground in these markets,” Lima Leite told CNN.

Exports Declining Amid Growing Imports

Anfavea’s 2024 report, presented in São Paulo, highlighted a significant shift: for the first time since 2014, vehicle imports (463,000 units) surpassed exports (403,000 units).

In Brazil, Automakers exports are becoming increasingly concentrated in Argentina, which now accounts for 39% of all exports — a worrying trend for the industry. In 2017, exports peaked at 766,000 units.

Anfavea is currently conducting a study to map potential measures to revitalize export growth. The association emphasizes that such actions are critical to reclaiming market share and ensuring the competitiveness of the Brazilian automotive industry.
