Furniture and Mattress Exports Record Positive Year-to-Date Performance

After a significant 7.9% growth in September, Brazilian exports of furniture and mattresses experienced a slight decline of 1.1% in the following month. However, this performance remained higher than that recorded in the same period last year, pushing the cumulative growth between January and October 2024 to +1.4%. The cumulative variation over the last 12 months observed the same increase.

The indicators reflect a USD 613.6 million (FOB) increase in foreign sales during the first ten months of the year, underscoring the strategic role of the international market for the national furniture sector.

Abimóvel (Brazilian Furniture Industry Association) delivered the information based on a survey conducted by IEMI exclusively for the Brazilian Furniture Sectoral Project, an initiative developed in partnership with ApexBrasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency).

Growth, however, also highlights changes in the market landscape. Among the main destinations, the United States remained the largest consumer of Brazilian furniture abroad, representing 29.3% of total exports in the period, with a total of USD 179.6 million. This share, however, is relatively lower than the average of recent years.

On the other hand, countries such as Uruguay and Chile, with shares of 10.6% and 7.3%, respectively, have been climbing the ranking of destinations for Brazilian furniture and mattresses. This highlights a consistent and strategic dynamic for positioning the Brazilian industry—which is the largest in Latin America—to meet regional demands.

Another relevant and emerging market is Europe, a region offering diverse economies and opportunities. These could receive an additional boost with the consolidation of the European Union-Mercosur Agreement. After 25 years of negotiations, the agreement’s text has been finalized and will now proceed to preparations for its official signing. If concluded, it could become the largest trade agreement ever reached by the South American bloc and one of the world’s largest bilateral free trade areas. Abimóvel, however, awaits the release of the final text to assess its impacts on the furniture market.

2025 Outlook for Furniture and Mattress Exports

With a maintained trade surplus and cumulative growth through October, projections for the furniture and mattress sector indicate a modest yet positive close to 2024 in exports, highlighting emerging opportunities in the international market for 2025.

In this context, Abimóvel emphasizes the importance of diversifying the product mix and target markets, with investments in design, sustainability, and Brazilian identity (“brasilidade”) as competitive differentiators to address challenges such as international competition, external demand fluctuations, and trade barriers imposed by some countries.

Promotional Initiatives for Brazilian Furniture Abroad

Among ongoing initiatives to showcase Brazilian furniture internationally, the National Furniture Design Award, organized by the furniture industry association with support from ApexBrasil and Sebrae (Brazilian Service of Support for Micro and Small Enterprises), is accepting registrations until February 11, 2025, via the website: mkt.abimovel.com/premiodesign.

The award invites designers, architects, students, and furniture manufacturers to submit innovative creations in seven categories. Selected pieces will be presented at major events in Brazil and abroad, such as the 2025 National Furniture Congress in Curitiba (PR).
