New Shipping Route Between Ceará and China Could Boost Imports by 20%, Benefit Shopee and AliExpress

The Port of Pecém, in the Brazilian state of Ceará, has recently upgraded its international logistics network. A new direct maritime route between China and Ceará—named the Santana Service—was officially announced on Wednesday (7) through a partnership between MSC (Mediterranean Shipping Company) and APM Terminals. According to industry estimates, the new connection is expected to increase imports into the state by up to 20% and enhance logistics for international e-commerce.

The key innovation of this route lies in its direct link between strategic Asian ports and Ceará, drastically reducing transit times. The voyage departs from Mundra (India) and calls at Singapore, as well as major Chinese ports, including Yantian, Ningbo, Shanghai, and Qingdao. It also includes a stop in Busan, South Korea, and returns via Panama and the Dominican Republic before arriving in Ceará.

The average transit time from Chinese ports to Pecém is 60 to 65 days. With the new route, this timeframe is expected to drop to approximately 30 to 37 days, representing a significant gain in efficiency for foreign trade operations.

“We expect a substantial increase in cargo throughput, with up to a 20% rise in imports. This marks a relevant efficiency gain for importers,” said Augusto Fernandes, CEO of JM Negócios Internacionais, a company specialized in customs brokerage and international trade.

Impacts on E-commerce and Logistics

The new connection will directly benefit the e-commerce sector, especially major platforms such as Shopee and AliExpress, which continue to expand their presence in Brazil. Faster delivery times will give these companies a competitive edge. However, Fernandes pointed out that freight cost reductions for end consumers will not be immediate, although delivery time improvements are already clear.

“Cost savings won’t be significant in the short term, but transit time is the biggest impact. With shorter delivery cycles, companies can optimize inventory, improve sales planning, and enhance operational efficiency,” he explained.

The new route strengthens the Port of Pecém’s role as a strategic logistics hub for Brazil, further integrating the state into the global supply chain. It also represents a new opportunity for Ceará to consolidate its position in foreign trade and attract investments in logistics, transportation, and technology.
