As Brazil’s port sector resumes full operations after Carnival, a delegation from the Suape Industrial Port Complex is on an official mission to Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia aimed at attracting investment and establishing direct maritime links with ASEAN countries.
The initiative, dubbed the Suape–Brazil–ASEAN Mission, follows a cooperation agreement signed in December 2025 between the port authority and Brazil’s Brazil–ASEAN Congressional Front. The delegation is led by Suape CEO Armando Monteiro Bisneto and includes Legal Director João Paiva and Special Advisor Alexandre Cardoso, along with representatives from the congressional group and Brazil’s Foreign Ministry.
Strategic Focus and Energy Transition
Suape, currently Brazil’s sixth-busiest public port, is presenting Pernambuco state’s logistics potential to Asian investors. Key projects highlighted during the trip include:
- The new container terminal being developed by APM Terminals;
- E-methanol production plants tied to energy transition initiatives;
- The Transnordestina railway project; and
- A solid mineral bulk terminal.
According to 2025 data from Brazil’s National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq), ASEAN is already the fourth-largest origin and destination region for cargo moving through Brazilian ports, underscoring the strategic rationale for deeper commercial engagement.
Singapore: Innovation and Port Partnerships
The mission began Thursday (19) in Singapore, where the delegation visited Pier71, a maritime innovation hub focused on digitalization and decarbonization. Meetings were also held with executives from Shopee — which operates a distribution center in Pernambuco — and DBS Bank to discuss financing models involving public-private partnerships and concessions.
On Friday (20), the delegation is scheduled to meet with Portek International and PSA International, operator of the world’s largest transshipment hub, to explore potential operational partnerships.
Malaysia: Oil, Gas and Refining
On Monday, the group heads to Malaysia, with visits planned to Westports and Northport, where memoranda of understanding for technical cooperation are expected to be signed.
The agenda also includes the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex, operated by state energy company Petronas, and meetings with sugar refiner MSM Malaysia. One of the mission’s objectives is to attract vessels from MISC Berhad, Petronas’ shipping arm, for maintenance and repair services at Suape.
Indonesia: Institutional Engagement
The final leg of the trip takes place in Indonesia, with meetings scheduled at the ASEAN Secretariat and the Indonesia Investment Authority, the country’s sovereign wealth fund. The delegation is also set to meet with specialized media in Jakarta before returning to Brazil on Feb. 28.
The mission reflects Suape’s broader strategy to diversify trade flows, strengthen ties with Asian partners and position itself as a key logistics hub for energy transition and industrial development in northeastern Brazil.
