Increased grain exports put Brazil logistics under stress

The scene of soybean and corn exports from Brazil is evolving at high speed; however, this significant increase in grain flow brings along logistical challenges. The accelerated pace of shipments has consequently led to rising freight costs and restrictions in port capacities.
Experts from the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea) assert that this situation has driven sellers away from the domestic spot market, resulting in reduced liquidity in domestic transactions. As a result, soybean prices have shown subtle day-to-day fluctuations.
In ports, sources consulted by Cepea indicate that Santos (SP) is facing limitations in receiving soybeans due to its storage capacity. As an alternative, more active negotiations have been taking place in the ports of Paranaguá and São Francisco, albeit for deliveries scheduled from October 2023.
Partial data from the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex) reveals that by the third week of August, the soybean shipment volume has already reached 5.4 million tonnes, a monthly average 48.6% higher than in August 2022.
