CCGL terminal at Port of Rio Grande to quadruple vessel loading capacity with R$700 million investment

CCGL’s terminal at the Port of Rio Grande is expected to quadruple its vessel loading capacity after the completion of an investment package estimated at up to R$700 million. The works are being carried out at Termasa, a grain terminal located in the Rio Grande port complex, and are scheduled for completion by October 2026.
According to the company’s vice president, Guillermo Dawson Junior, the main change will be the pace at which cargo is loaded.
“Termasa used to load 1,500 tonnes per hour. It will now load 6,000 tonnes per hour. That means its loading capacity will increase fourfold,” he said.
The terminal will also be able to handle larger vessels. Its current structure serves ships of up to 60,000 tonnes. After the works, it will be able to receive vessels of up to 150,000 tonnes.
The works began in late 2024, after the impacts of the floods in Rio Grande do Sul. During the climate disaster, a vessel collided with the terminal’s structure, damaging the operating pier.
According to Dawson, the reconstruction ended up accelerating a broader modernization project that the company had already been planning.
“We had wanted to invest in Rio Grande for quite some time. When the collision happened, we moved forward with all the investment needed to increase Termasa’s capacity,” he said.
Planned works include the construction of a warehouse with capacity for 120,000 tonnes, the installation of five new truck dumpers, improvements to rail logistics, the implementation of a new power substation and a full retrofit of the terminal.
According to CCGL’s vice president, the goal is to prepare the structure for the coming decades.
“Termasa was the first grain terminal in the country. Now we are transforming it with a 50-year outlook,” he said.
In a statement, Portos RS President Cristiano Klinger said the investment strengthens the competitiveness of Rio Grande do Sul’s port complex.
“The modernization of the terminal strengthens our logistics structure, expands operating capacity and demonstrates the private sector’s confidence in the work being carried out at the port complex,” he said.
The improvements are expected to increase operational efficiency and strengthen Rio Grande do Sul’s agribusiness chain, which relies on the Port of Rio Grande as one of the state’s main export corridors.
