Argentina’s economic activity is expected to have grown 2% year on year in April, slowing sharply from 5.5% growth in March, according to the median forecast in a Reuters poll of 10 analysts released Friday.
Although the annual reading is expected to remain positive, analysts forecast a monthly decline from March, pointing to an uneven and fragile recovery.
The survey showed an average year-on-year forecast of 1.9%, with estimates ranging from no growth to a 3.7% increase.
“What we see in April confirms the fragility of growth. There is no rebound or sustained expansion,” said Lucio Garay, an economist at consultancy Eco Go.
According to container movement data compiled by Datamar, only one of Argentina’s ten leading export products was not related to agribusiness or food products. See below the volumes recorded from January through April:

Garay said agriculture and industry were the main sectors behind the expected monthly decline. Exports fell more than 10% from March, while investment dropped 2.5% in April, according to his estimates.
Argentina’s industrial production fell 2.8% year on year in April, according to the manufacturing production index, known as IPIm, released by national statistics agency INDEC.
INDEC is scheduled to publish April data for the Monthly Economic Activity Estimator, or EMAE, on Monday at 1900 GMT. The indicator is closely watched by analysts as a key proxy for GDP performance.
