Argentine producers warn of protest against meat-export limits

On September 9th, Argentina’s main agricultural associations stated that they plan a collective action to protest against the extension of government limits on beef exports; the deadline and scope of the actions are still under discussion.
At the end of last month, the Argentine government extended until Oct. 31 a ceiling for beef exports at half of the normal levels in an attempt to increase domestic supply and contain food prices, which are accelerating.
The South American country is the fifth-largest beef exporter in the world, an important global supplier of wheat, the second-largest exporter of corn, and the largest exporter of soybean oil and meal.
The four main agricultural bodies said in a joint statement that they met earlier in the day to discuss plans for “collective actions we will take after (government) intervention in the cattle and beef market.”
“We are defining with our bases how we will protest”, they said.
