BANANA/CEPEA: Exports Rise in April, Especially to Europe

According to Comex Stat, Brazilian banana exports continued to rise in April. Exports to Brazil’s main destination, Mercosur, reached 7.6 thousand tons during the period, up 24% compared to March. To the European Union, volumes totaled 1.8 thousand tons, a 51% increase. In both cases, figures were significantly higher than in the same period last year.
According to exporters consulted by Hortifrúti/Cepea, the growth is mainly due to a higher supply of ‘nanica’ bananas this year—especially in comparison to last year—ensuring greater availability and more competitive prices on the international market. It’s worth noting that the main exporting region to Mercosur is northern Santa Catarina, while exports to the European Union are primarily shipped from Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará.
Here is a historical overview of Brazilian banana exports starting from 2022. The data is from DataLiner:

Regarding the South American bloc, the lower supply from competitors such as Bolivia and Paraguay favored Brazilian shipments throughout the month. As for the European bloc, the increase in demand was likely driven by weather-related impacts on production in Central America and in southern countries such as Colombia and Peru, both of which are important banana suppliers to the European market.
Initial forecasts for May suggested that Brazilian exports to South American countries would remain strong. However, with the resumption of banana supply from Bolivia and Paraguay during the month, market agents reported a decline in Brazilian shipments to other countries on the continent.
