Brazil consolidated itself as the main buyer of Bolivian urea in the first quarter of this year, since 77% of the fertilizer produced by YPFB was destined for the neighboring country, the president of Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos, Armin Dorgathen Tapia, reported today.

In the aforementioned period, approximately 81,933 metric tons of fertilizer produced at the “Marcelo Quiroga Santa Cruz” Ammonia and Urea Plant were delivered by the state oil company to consumer markets. Of this amount, 16,286 tons were used to supply the domestic market and 65,647 tons were sold to export markets.

“20% of this amount was destined to supply the domestic market. The surplus production of agro fertilizer was destined for Brazil (the main buyer with a volume greater than 63,300 metric tons), Peru, Paraguay and Argentina, countries that demand Bolivian urea, since our product contributes to the increase in crops, a need that also it is growing in the region,” said Dorgathen Tapia.

Despite Brazil’s leading position in Bolivia’s urea export agenda, the largest country in South America imports the product from many other countries in even larger quantities. The commercialization of granulated urea destined for the internal and external markets, allowed Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB) to invoice a value of more than USD 31.9 million between January and March 2023.

The petrochemical complex located in the town of Bulo Bulo in the department of Cochabamba, has one of the best technologies in Latin America, a condition that allows Bolivia to aim to be a country that contributes a competitive fertilizer to agriculture and contributes to food security in the region.

Bolivian fertilizer competes with products from other continents that arrive in the countries of the region in transoceanic ships.

In Bolivia, sales were recorded to various clients, including producers and wholesale distributors, as well as to public entities such as the Food Production Support Company (EMAPA) and the Strategic Company for the Production of Fertilizers and Fertilizers (EEPAF).
