Brazil and China Finalize Agreement for Bi-Oceanic Railway Corridor to Peru

The Brazilian Ministry of Transport, through Infra S.A., signed an agreement on Monday (7) with China State Railway, the world’s largest state-owned railway company. The partnership is expected to bring the bi-oceanic railway corridor to life, connecting Brazil (starting from Bahia) to the Port of Chancay in Peru, which is expected to reduce both the time and costs of exports to China.

The agreement provides for joint studies to assess the feasibility of a new bi-oceanic railway corridor to the Pacific Ocean via the Port of Chancay. The proposal aims to reposition Brazil in global trade with logistical, economic, and environmental benefits.

The memorandum of understanding is the result of efforts initiated in April when a Chinese delegation visited Brazil and toured strategic projects, including the West-East Integration Railway (Fiol) and the Central-West Integration Railway (Fico). In May, during an official mission to China, the Brazilian Federal Government held meetings with Chinese authorities, deepening the technical and institutional dialogue that led to the formalization of the partnership.

Since then, teams from both countries have been conducting analyses of Brazil’s logistics infrastructure, focusing on the outflow of agricultural and mineral production from the Central-West region to the ports of the Northern Arc and Southeast. The Fico-Fiol railway axis—whose auction is scheduled for next year—is the foundation of the corridor under study.

The project also considers integration with other transportation modes, such as highways and waterways. The goal is to establish an integrated, sustainable logistics network that is connected to the world’s main trade corridors.
