During an event held at the Itamaraty Palace on Thursday (May 22), new authorizations for exporting Brazilian agricultural products to African countries were announced due to the 2nd Brazil-Africa Dialogue on Food Security, Fighting Hunger, and Rural Development.

Nine new trade opportunities were formalized in total, with Benin standing out as a key market. The country is now authorized to import live cattle and buffalo, embryos of these species (both in vivo and in vitro), semen, fertile eggs, day-old chicks, swine semen, brachiaria grass seeds, and apples.

Senegal was also included, with authorization to import bovine and buffalo embryos.

These measures are part of a renewed cooperation policy between Brazil and Africa, particularly in biotechnology, genetic improvement, and technical exchange. A key development was the announcement of the reactivation of Embrapa’s presence in Africa, focusing on knowledge transfer and support for local agricultural production.

In addition to export authorizations, memorandums of understanding were signed with Ethiopia, Nigeria, Benin, Kenya, and Ivory Coast to expand technical cooperation, especially in agriculture, livestock, food security, and rural development.

At the closing session, Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira led the adoption of the Final Declaration of the Dialogue, a document consolidating the commitments discussed during the event, with particular emphasis on the role of women and youth in building sustainable food systems.

About the Event

The four-day event gathered African Ministers of Agriculture, Brazilian authorities, international organizations, and representatives from various sectors. The agenda included technical visits to institutions such as Embrapa and Conab, meetings with rural cooperatives, and sustainable production projects.

On Wednesday (May 21), the African delegation visited Petrolina in Pernambuco to learn about semi-arid agriculture initiatives, including irrigation and fruit cultivation projects developed by Embrapa Semiárido.

The closing of the Dialogue was marked by thematic discussions and the formal signing of cooperation agreements, reaffirming the mutual interest in strengthening relations in agricultural development and food security.
