Brazil Footwear Exports Decline After U.S. Tariff Hike

A survey by the Brazilian Footwear Industry Association (Abicalçados), based on Secex data, shows that 6.9 million pairs were exported in November, generating US$65.8 million. The figures represent declines of 17.7% in volume and 13.3% in revenue compared with the same month in 2024. From January to November 2025, shipments totaled 94.2 million pairs, with revenue of US$885.2 million. The result indicates a 5.1% increase in volume but a 2% drop in revenue compared with the same period of the previous year.
According to Abicalçados’ CEO, Haroldo Ferreira, the setback in November reflects the intensification of the impact of the additional tariff applied by the United States on Brazilian footwear. “The United States is the main international destination for Brazilian footwear, accounting for more than 20% of export revenue, and therefore has a large impact on our trade balance. While exports are declining, the trade diversion triggered by U.S. policy has boosted footwear imports. In the four months of the surcharge’s validity, volumes shipped to the United States have accumulated a 23.4% drop, a result that erased the year-to-date growth recorded up to July,” Ferreira noted.
Another reason, he said, is the decline in shipments to Argentina, the result of slower consumption and intensified international competition. Argentina is the second-largest international destination for Brazilian footwear, accounting for 20% of total export revenue.
