Brazil sets record fertilizer imports in 2025 as logistics shift north

Brazil saw a record volume of fertilizer imports in 2025. According to the January 2026 Logistics Bulletin released by the National Supply Company (Conab), the country imported 45.5 million tonnes of fertilizer inputs last year, up 2.68% from the 44.28 million tonnes registered in 2024.
The increase reflects the strategy of Brazil’s agricultural sector to expand planted acreage and pursue productivity gains in the 2025/26 crop cycle. Mato Grosso, Paraná and São Paulo remained the main consumption hubs, tracking the strong flow of record soybean and corn harvests.
Brazil’s port system proved resilient in handling the record volumes, although performance varied among the main gateways.
The Port of Paranaguá, in Paraná state, remained the country’s primary entry point for fertilizers, handling 10.89 million tonnes in 2025. Despite a 1.36% decline from the previous year, the port accounted for nearly a quarter of total national fertilizer intake.
The strongest growth was seen in ports across the North and Northeast, known collectively as the Northern Arc, where volumes rose to 8.27 million tonnes from 7.5 million tonnes in 2024, underscoring the decentralisation of imports and the efficiency gains from newer logistics corridors.
By contrast, the Port of Santos handled 8.42 million tonnes, a drop of 5.18% year on year, losing ground to the expansion of northern routes and steadier flows in the south.
Data collected and processed by Datamar’s business intelligence team show that fertilizer imports from Brazil’s three main trading partners increased overall in 2025. Imports from Russia and China rose by 3.3% and 37%, respectively, while purchases from the United States fell by 18.7%.
Below is a breakdown of the 10 largest countries of origin for Brazil’s fertilizer imports, along with their respective shares of Brazilian market. The data are available on Datamar’s DataLiner platform.

Supply chain resilience in fertilizers is seen by analysts as a key pillar supporting Brazil’s agricultural exports, which also reached record levels in 2025, totalling 172.3 million tonnes of soybeans, corn and soybean meal.
On the domestic front, operating costs remain in focus. The road freight market ended the year broadly stable, but the fertilizer sector expects upward pressure from February. The acceleration of the soybean harvest is likely to intensify competition for trucks, pushing up the cost of transporting fertilizers from ports to inland regions, particularly on routes serving Mato Grosso and the broader Centre-West, where grain inventories remain high.
