Brazilian Ports Set Cargo Throughput Record in March, Reaching 113.7 Million Tons

In March 2025, Brazilian ports handled 113.7 million tons of cargo, a 5.49% increase compared to the same period last year and a record for the month.
According to data from the Waterway Statistics Report by the National Waterway Transport Agency (ANTAQ), the total cargo throughput for the year’s first quarter reached 303.8 million tons, reflecting a 1.92% decrease.
Long-haul navigation accounted for 80.8 million tons of cargo throughout the third month of the year, marking a 7.85% increase compared to March 2024.
Cabotage shipping reached 24.2 million tons, a 2.17% decline, while inland navigation handled 8.4 million tons, up 9.92%.
Cargo Types
General cargo throughput rose 8.67%, totaling 5.6 million tons, while solid bulk increased 7.25% compared to the same month in 2024, reaching 67.8 million tons. Meanwhile, liquid bulk cargo totaled 27.5 million tons, up 3.22%.
Container throughput stood at 12.6 million tons, remaining stable with a 0.16% increase in March, equivalent to 1.2 million TEUs. Of this total, 8.6 million tons were moved via long-haul shipping and 3.9 million tons via cabotage.
Public Ports
Public ports handled 40.1 million tons of cargo in March 2025, a 1.96% increase compared to the same month of the previous year.
Among Brazil’s top 20 public ports, the Port of Santana (Amapá) recorded the highest growth rate in March, with an increase of 47.33% compared to March 2024. The port handled 0.4 million tons of cargo.
Private Terminals
Authorized private terminals saw a 7.52% increase in cargo throughput compared to March last year, totaling 73.5 million tons.
Among the 20 busiest private use terminals (TUPs) in March, the Ponta Ubu Maritime Terminal (Espírito Santo) recorded the highest growth, with a 44.90% increase. The terminal moved 1.2 million tons of cargo.
