Brazil harvested a record 346.1 million tonnes of grains in 2025, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), marking an increase of 18.2% from 2024 and more than double the volume recorded in 2012.
The latest figure compares with a harvest of 162 million tonnes in 2012, meaning total output has risen 113.6% over the past 13 years.
Over the same period, the expansion in planted area was far more moderate. Cropland increased 66.8%, from 48.9 million hectares in 2012 to 81.6 million hectares in 2025, highlighting strong gains in agricultural productivity.
Carlos Alfredo Guedes, IBGE’s agriculture manager, attributed the productivity gains to years of research led by institutions such as Embrapa, which developed crop varieties adapted to Brazil’s diverse biomes.
According to Guedes, the record 2025 harvest was driven mainly by strong performances in soybeans, corn and cotton, supported by highly favorable weather conditions. Canephora coffee and sorghum also posted positive results.
