On June 23, BYD began sea trials for the Zhengzhou, its seventh ro-ro vessel dedicated to vehicle exports. Delivery is expected in July.
Guangzhou Shipyard International built the ship and joined BYD’s maritime fleet, which includes vessels named after Chinese cities that host the automaker’s factories.
Details on the New Vessel and BYD’s Fleet
Measuring 199.9 meters in length and 38 meters in width, the Zhengzhou has a capacity of 7,000 vehicles. It features dual-fuel propulsion (LNG) and incorporates technologies such as a permanent magnet shaft generator and energy-saving systems. It is a sister ship to the Hefei.
As of June 2025, BYD has already launched the following ships:
- BYD Explorer No. 1 (4,000 vehicles)
- Changzhou
- Hefei
- Shenzhen (9,200 cars)
- Xi’an (9,200 vehicles)
- Changsha (operations began on June 24, also with a 9,200-vehicle capacity)
The eighth ship, named Jinan, is expected to be delivered between August and September.
Transport Goals and Export Growth
BYD aims to complete its fleet of eight ro-ro ships by 2026, enabling it to transport over 1 million vehicles per year by sea.
Meanwhile, the company set a new export record in May, shipping 89,000 units. From January to May, exports totaled 374,200 vehicles—a 112% increase compared to the same period in 2024. These figures reflect BYD’s growing presence in the global market.
