China has committed to buying at least US$17 billion a year in U.S. agricultural products in 2026, 2027 and 2028, according to a White House statement released on Sunday. The amount does not include commitments made by Beijing in October 2025 to purchase U.S. soybeans.
The commitment was made during meetings between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping last week, according to the statement.
The White House also said China had resumed imports of poultry from U.S. states considered free of highly pathogenic avian influenza by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Also on the agricultural agenda, the White House said China will work with U.S. regulators to lift all restrictions imposed on American beef plants.
On Friday (15), China renewed export licenses for 402 U.S. beef plants and approved another 77 facilities. The licenses had expired in February and March of last year. The United States now has 730 facilities authorized to export beef to China, although shipments from 38 of them remain suspended.
According to Reuters, tariffs imposed by the United States on Chinese goods and by China on U.S. imports led to a sharp decline in U.S. agricultural exports to China. Trade fell 65.7% from the previous year to US$8.4 billion in 2025, according to USDA data cited by the news agency.
The White House also said in Sunday’s statement that the two countries would establish a U.S.-China Trade Council and a U.S.-China Investment Council.
