Brazil’s egg exports (including fresh and processed eggs) totaled 5,358 tonnes in May, according to data released by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) on Tuesday (June 10). The figure marks a sharp 295.8% increase compared to the same month last year and represents the first time exports have exceeded 5,000 tonnes.
Export revenue rose even more sharply, jumping 356.2% in May to USD 13.756 million.
From January to May, egg exports more than doubled to 18,357 tonnes, a 165.6% increase compared to the same period last year. Revenue reached USD 42.10 million, representing a 195.8% increase.
“The egg sector has been experiencing strong export growth amid a reconfiguration of shipment flows, with the United States, Japan, and Mexico now among the main destinations,” said ABPA president Ricardo Santin in a statement.
The United States significantly increased purchases following severe outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1), also known as bird flu, which led to a reduction in the country’s laying hen population.
Brazil recorded its first case of bird flu on a commercial farm in May in the municipality of Montenegro (Rio Grande do Sul). However, the outbreak has not spread, and the number of birds culled has been far lower than in the U.S.
“Even with suspensions resulting from the isolated case of avian influenza in Brazil, sales remained strong, demonstrating market confidence in Brazil’s biosecurity,” Santin added.
Exports to the United States — the top destination — rose 996% between January and May, reaching 9,735 tonnes. Chile followed with 2,354 tonnes, a 10.8% increase.
