End of Export Taxes in a Year of Expected Record Argentine Rice Exports

The Argentine government’s announcement to reduce export taxes on agricultural products and eliminate them for some was welcomed as significant for regional economies.
“This was a significant announcement for regional economies, especially for rice. It comes at a very timely moment because we are just starting exports. It was a long-awaited measure,” said Cristian Jetter, vice president of the Corrientes Association of Rice Producers (ACPA).
“We are on track to have a historic harvest in the province. We estimate yields of 6,000 to 6,500 kilograms of rice per hectare, with 109,000 hectares planted,” he said. “Around 70 to 75% of the production will be exported, consolidating rice as the main export product of Corrientes, both in volume and dollars,” the producer explained.
“Deals are being made with Costa Rica and Mexico, markets that demand high-quality rice, and Corrientes is well-positioned to meet that demand,” he added.
In 2023, export duties for various products had already been reduced to zero, including some rice varieties. Jetter explained that the reduction applies to paddy rice (including broken rice) this time.
“Export taxes were one of the most significant costs for production. This new reduction is very important for producers. For paddy rice, it’s $13 per ton. If we apply this to the harvest per hectare, it represents $100, which translates into farmer profitability,” he concluded.
