Brazilian Federal Revenue authorities inspected on Tuesday, March 29, three export cargoes destined for Europe at the Port of Santos, on the coast of São Paulo. In total, they found 47kg of cocaine hidden in a reefer container.
According to the Federal Revenue Service, these inspections are part of a surveillance program whose goal is to fight illicit customs actions. The Federal Revenue Risk Management team selected twelve containers to go through analysis with image scanners. Also, one sniffer dog participated in the operation.
The first cargo inspected, which consisted of ten containers filled with corn destined for Portugal, showed no signs of contamination. The second load consisted of paper bound for France, with no narcotics found either.
On the other hand, amidst 5,280 cardboard boxes of lemons, 47kg of cocaine tablets were found in a reefer container. According to the Revenue Service, the drug was hidden in an area reserved for cargo refrigeration components within the container structure. The container’s destination was England.
After confirming the presence of the narcotics, the Federal Police was summoned to investigate the scene and participate collaboratively in the operation. The seized narcotics will be held by the Federal Police, who will conduct investigations based on information provided by the Brazilian Revenue Service.
