A fire struck a crane on the quay at the Port of Itajaí, on the northern coast of Santa Catarina state, late on Saturday night (May 25), leaving the structure completely destroyed.
No one was injured, according to the port authority. The cause of the fire will be investigated.
The fire began at 9:33 p.m. at the JBS Terminals facility, according to the port authority. Firefighters arrived at 9:45 p.m.
By the time crews began fighting the blaze, the crane was already fully engulfed. The fire was at an advanced stage and had reached the cabin and other mechanical systems in the upper part of the structure.
Firefighters had to use an aerial ladder to reach that area, in addition to deploying a tugboat during the operation.
According to information provided by the port to firefighters, the crane was undergoing maintenance at the time of the fire. The structure had 12,000 liters of diesel fuel in its tank, as well as hydraulic oil.
About 30,000 liters of water were used to extinguish the blaze. By 11 p.m., the fire had been brought under control, according to the port authority.
In addition to firefighters, the port’s emergency response team also helped with the operation and the logistics involving the tugboat.
